Caring Christians Offer Me Help - No, Really.

I am going to the Veterans Administration Wednesday for surgery on my right hand to relieve Dupuytren's Contractures, the second time in four years. This time there is a difference. Four years ago I lived in Oklahoma, where as an atheist my Christian neighbours mostly ignored me; those that didn't offered to pray for healing for my hands (rather than thank a skilled surgeon). Now I live in a tiny village in the…See More

Caring Christians Offer Me Help - No, Really.

Posted on April 29, 2013 at 9:42pm 6 Comments

I am going to the Veterans Administration Wednesday for surgery on my right hand to relieve Dupuytren's Contractures, the second time in four years.

This time there is a difference. Four years ago I lived in Oklahoma, where as an atheist my Christian neighbours…

The Real Danger of Going Out in Public: Influenza.

Posted on January 16, 2013 at 7:12pm 4 Comments

My wife and I had an absolutely marvellous time at the Wyoming Mensa Dine-Out SIG in Cheyenne the other day.

A real city (with real traffic lights—it took a minute to realise those were not street corner decorations), fine food, fine conversation, and the chance to gather with other Mensans…

Not shovelling my walks for the church goers today.

Posted on January 13, 2013 at 6:30am 9 Comments

Last week when it snowed, I shovelled my walks, primarily for the church-goers across the street.

Today the wind chill is -26 F. Nope. Not doing it today, city trustee or no.

My first full City Council Meeting as an Atheist Member Tomorrow

Posted on January 6, 2013 at 11:00pm 6 Comments

The religious will frequently argue that an atheist is inappropriate as a government representative for various reasons (you need a moral compass, ad nauseum).

The village clerk came by my house Friday afternoon with the agenda for the meeting. This will be my first full meeting as a councilman on the Village Board. Let's take a look at the agenda, and see where a "Christian Viewpoint (tm)" would be of use (more…

Welcome, James! Glad you could join us. :D

Please consider joining a group to meet people and talk about anything that's on your mind, Hang With Friends. You might also want to look at Military Atheists, Ex-Wiccans and Pagans, Atheist Writers and Geek and Nerd Haven.

I also recommend Eco-Logical and Climate Concerns, since Nebraska's climate is changing.

After you've searched for topics of interest in "Groups" above and in the "Forums", don't forget to look at recent activity which hides along the right margin of the page all the way at the bottom.

War on Christmas in May

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/21/texas-merry-christmas-bill_n_3312786.html?utm_hp_ref=politics

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day.  however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more.  in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…

My first funeral as an atheist

Posted by Two Cult Survivor on May 21, 2013 at 11:30am 0 Comments

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 8 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

Unbelievable!!!!!!!!

Posted by Christy Stewart on May 20, 2013 at 2:17pm 6 Comments

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…
