"There is an error in your logic Cliff. It would be accurate to argue: If there were no Communists would there be any Anti-Communists. There is plenty of concrete, 5-senses evidence out there to prove the existence of Communists. Since their is no…"
"I just got a version of that response from a friend yesterday. She suffered abuse at the hands of her stepfather in the name of god and yet she still clings to that faith because she would be "lost without it". It's a form of the…"
Welcome to Atheist Nexus. It is truly inspiring to see that someone can rise above such a harsh beginning, and free yourself from the bounds of indoctrination and abuse.
Atheist Nexus has a lot of groups for many interests. It's helpful to peruse them and find out what fits you.
You do not have to feel isolated. Even though your experience is truly unique, there are many former fundamentalists, and former ministers, and ministers' children, who have 'seen the light' and become atheist.
Best wishes. I would be one of then first to read your book, once it is published.
Nate: I am Darrel Ray, Author of The God Virus: How religion infects our lives and culture. I saw your amazing speech at the American Atheist conference and wanted to connect with you. I was the person that commented right after Dr. Dawkins about being from Kansas and watching the Phelps family for 30 years. Thanks for your courage and willingness to share your experiences.
Good to hear from you Nate. Take a look at our new initiative, Recovering from Religion at recoveringreligionists.com. If this is something you would be interested in, I would like to talk about it. I think you have a lot to offer anyone who is trying to recover from religion. Take a look at the "considerations" page on the website. It may look mild, compare to your experience, but you can probably relate to most of the issues. All the best.
i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day. however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more. in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…
I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.
I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).
THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…
OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…
This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.
I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…
