Hiya, friend across the hall!! That took me a minute -- I'm aging, you know -- but the bell finally rang. Good to hear from you.

Yay Wichita! I grew up about 60 miles west of Wichita in the 500 person "village" of Cunningham :P I was raised Methodist, so I wasn't active in freethought circles when I lived there. Is there any kind of atheist presence in Wichita at all?

Awesome, my mom grew up in Pratt! She isn't an atheist, but she's pretty moderate. Do you know many people from the Pratt area then, or did your sister just relocate there?

I figured as much regarding the freethinking presence in Wichita. I have a friend that was active in UU activities there, I think. Blah.

That's a great picture you have of your with Julia Sweeney. She's such a doll. Got to meet her at the Atheist Alliance International annual meeting when it was in KC and have crossed paths with her a few times since then. Did you happen to attend that event? Sucks when you have to travel 4 hours to find like-minded people :P

My kids attend grade school in the Washburn Rural district. It is nice finding infidels in the bible belt.

I didn't know there were any other atheists in this bible belt of shame. I'm so happy to be here.

My brother writes quite a few letters to the newspaper, gets us some strange calls from some really "ill" people. If my brother or I had school age children we would not be able to write those letters. I had a guy at spirit one church threaten to bring the flock over and picket my house, I told him, "that would be great, but give me a few days notice so we can get a keg of beer and round up some heathens, dammit, they never showed up.

War on Christmas in May

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/21/texas-merry-christmas-bill_n_3312786.html?utm_hp_ref=politics

i've got no problem with everyone saying "merry christmas" on christmas day.  however, they've turned it into an entire holiday season where it lasts a month or more.  in those situations it should be perfectly acceptable to say "happy holidays" or call it a…

My first funeral as an atheist

Posted by Two Cult Survivor on May 21, 2013 at 11:30am 0 Comments

I posted the bulk of this on another thread, but wanted to add some context separately.

I finally confronted my faith and embraced the fact of my atheism late last August, 2012. Days after I revealed my "epiphany" to a few friends who knew me from another message board, my sister died from Lou Gehrig's Disease (which pissed her off because she hated catching a disease from someone she never f---ed).

THAT was my sister, understand? She was a beautiful, life-loving, potty-mouthed…

Death of a family member

Posted by Larry Taylor on May 20, 2013 at 8:15pm 12 Comments

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…
