I'm done. I quit. I give up. Besides, it's too late. It's hopeless, despite the "springs eternal" cliche.
After 13 years of being a bachelor, living the solitary life and all, I thought I'd try a couple of dating services. They all sound so promising. They lure you in with the "it's free to join" hook. But if, just if, someone bites (or you bite), they make you pay.
After you pay and contact someone, it never pans out. In my experience, the women write promising--almost…

The other evening, I was reflecting on my ancestors, realizing how little I know about them. What really irritates me is that I never thought to ask my grandparents questions about their parents and grandparents.
My maternal grandmother lost her husband when my mother was only 7 years old. I'm not sure why he died--perhaps leukemia. But I never once asked her about my grandfather. And my mother remembered very little.
On my father's side, neither grandparents talked about their…

Have I miscounted? Has it actually been 43 years since the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970?
I was teaching earth science in Pomona California. I remember organizing a "clean up" day, kids picking up litter and trash in their neighborhoods. They solicited money from residents (probably mostly parents) which, if remember right, came to around $350. We sent it to an animal "shelter" (zoo) in Edmonton Canada. We had seen a National Geographic film on the Craig brother's efforts to save…

I got about 5 inches of rain this past 3 days. Farm fields have ponded. I've even had ducks in my yard. Much of the rain water fed into my basement (old farm house), so the sump pump ran and ran and ran.
Too wet to mow, garden, even play golf. On top of that, my clothes dryer belt snapped. Too cold and wet to hang clothes outside. But, it could be worse.
My farm kids, for example, can't work the ground. It's their livelyhood. Greenhouse plantings are germinating. And they're…

Sentient Biped said… Hi Randdall. Thnk for the comment.
Tacoma is a town in WA state in Puget sound. Not far from me. It was the Indian name for Mount Ranier. Seattle airport is there (Sea-Tac). Means something like "giver of waters". Supposedly. Rivers to Seattle are Ranier glacial snowmelt.
I holding my own. Appointment with surgeon for evaluation Mon. Tues is appointment for biopsy. They have to put me out for that. If they are fast - big if - I could wind up in surgery next week. Wild guess, 1 or 2 weeks.
Thanks for asking. For a long time I've been trying to balance living in the moment, with preparing for a future tomorrow with something to look forward to and not regret, and learning from the past. This is the same. There have been a couple of "why bother" moments but not much. Yesterday was an intense high-pressure work day. Today Im a bit dizzy and tired.

By the way, I was shearing the dogs and thought about frugality. It's a major project, 2 hours for 2 dogs. At the pet store it's $60 per dog. Haven't been to a barber myself in a decade - every few years I buy a new clippers, keep it set at 1/8 inch and do it myself. Mostly I don't like waiting in line at the barber shop.

Sentient Biped said… Randall, do you grow paw paws? My grandfather did, west central Illinois. I'm attempting to but climate here might not be right. Late summer, I planted small paw paw trees, 3 cultivars, watered them thoroughly until fall. They look like they might be starting to grow- the leaf buds are dark, almost black, but seem to be enlarging. A rabbit or gopher ate one off. Varmint.
The Flying Atheist said… Randall, I consider myself as having a bit of a "brown thumb" so I've always appreciated those persons who have beautiful gardens, luscious-growing plants and farming/agricultural abilities. There's much pleasure and satisfaction achieved in watching seeds sprout and grow into such an array of beautiful (and tasteful) varieties of plants, vegetables and fruit. When done on a large scale, such as a farm, it's both art and science, and I have much respect for those who live that profession. As a city-bred born and raised person, I think I can honestly opine that most people take the source of their food for granted.
Ruth Anthony-Gardner said… Sorry for the long delay. I wasn't looking at my comments.
I read that 10% of the population can't put on muscle from weight training, that it's genetic. I would recommend 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily. Research shows that muscle health is highly correlated with vitamin D levels independent of exercise. It also helps to protect against cancer by strengthening the connections between cells (gap junctions more numerous).

OK. I am venting. My mother died two weeks ago. She was a “god fearing christian.” Before her death she refused all medical treatment. She wanted to be left alone. She even refused to speak with my brother who is a methodist minister. He is a pip, let me tell you! I suspect she did not believe, but a woman born in her time could not and did not state her actual beliefs. This is the opening salvo to all christians; FUCK YOU! I had so many people come and tell…

This probably should not have shocked me as much as it did (especially since I am in Texas). I actually thought my coworkers were playing a joke on me because they know I am an atheist. Sadly, this was no joke. This actually happened.
I work in a psychiatric hospital. The doctors who admit patients are general MDs. (Psychiatrists see patients after admission) Yesterday evening we received several calls from irate parents. A new doctor who was doing admissions yesterday actually…

What do you think of this,
Nathan Young,
No Jason Torpy it is you that should be banned for promoting atheism, a belief that has no foundation in reality and zero proof behind it. The letter was a mockery of your atheist beliefs. I request to the board here that they remove Jason for his unverifiable beliefs in atheism for which he has no proof other than his arrogance. The letter was a mockery of atheism. Atheism is stupid and it should be mocked and it…
